Katherine Arthur Behenna (1860-1924) was a Scottish-born US-based miniature portraitist.

Early life

Katherine Arthur Behenna was born in 1860 in Helensburgh, Scotland.[1][2] Her father was from Montreal, Canada.[2] She was educated in Montreal, Boston, as well as at the Art Students League of New York and the Académie Julian in Paris, France.[2]

Career

She painted miniature portraits of American Socialites of the Gilded Age for art collector Peter Marié, including Antoinette Polk, Baroness de Charette and Amélie Rives Troubetzkoy.[1][3] She also did a portrait of Louise, Princess Royal.[2]

Her work was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, England.[2] She later moved to Étaples, France, where she was a member of the Etaples art colony.[2]

She believed Helios was her muse.[1]


Personal life

She briefly married Henry Carstairs Behenna in 1885, and divorced shortly after.[2]
Death and legacy

She died in 1924.[1] Her miniature portraits from the Peter Marié Collection are kept at the New York Historical Society.
