Dispute the goldsmith fellows

Jean Ier de Gourmont (Carquebut, ca. 1483 - Lyon, after 1551) is a Renaissance painter, goldsmith and French engraver.

Jean de Gourmont (perhaps a son of a man named Richard de Gourmont), who was born in an important family of printers, publishers, painters and engravers, active throughout the sixteenth century, started in Paris around 1506 alongside his brothers Printers, Gilles and Robert. Around 1520 he went to Lyon where he was attested as a painter and engraver in intaglio from 1522 to 1526. . He married Jeanne Néret who gave him a daughter, Claude. He is attributed with engravings, drawings, but also some paintings such as an Adoration of the Shepherds (Paris, Louvre Museum), perhaps from the chapel of the Chateau d'Ecouen, whose attribution is now widely contested, and The Descent to the Cellar (1537, Frankfurt, Städelsches Kunstinstitut), today rather close to the Master of Dinteville (Bartholomeus Pons?).

The Master JG is sometimes associated to Jean de Gourmont. But this rapprochement is challenged with reason 3 by Estelle Leutrat 4.
