Carl August Liner (1871–1946) was a Swiss painter.

Life

Carl August Liner came from a many children craftsman's family, studied with Johann Caspar Herterich (painting class) and Paul Hoecker (Freilichtmalerei) at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich from 1890 to 1893, was 1894 to 1899 drawing instructor and illustrator in St. Gallen Rome, Terracina and Paris. In 1901 he was offered a professorship by the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, which he, however, rejected. He married Cécile Bernet in 1902, acquired a farm in the Unterrain near Appenzell in 1906, and in 1913 founded the St. Gallen section of the GSMBA (Society of Swiss Painters and Sculptors), whose president he became. In 1914 his son Carl Walter Liner († 1997) was born, who followed in his footsteps. In honor of the life work of father and son was opened in 1998 the Museum Liner Appenzell, today Kunstmuseum Appenzell.

The artistic work
Liner painted landscapes, peasant people and especially children. He designed stamps and posters and illustrated magazines.
