Η Εθνική Πινακοθήκη του Λονδίνου (National Gallery) ιδρύθηκε το 1824 και στεγάζει σήμερα μια από τις πλουσιότερες συλλογές πινάκων σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο. Οι 2.300 πίνακες που διαθέτει καλύπτουν την περίοδο από τα μέσα του 13ου αιώνα έως το 1900.[3] Βρίσκεται στην Πλατεία Τραφάλγκαρ στο Λονδίνο. Τα έργα που διαθέτει θεωρείται ότι ανήκουν στο Βρετανικό λαό και γι' αυτό η είσοδος στην Πινακοθήκη είναι δωρεάν (αυτό δεν ισχύει για τις ειδικές περιστασιακές εκθέσεις που διοργανώνει).
Σύντομη ιστορία
Το 1824 το Βρετανικό Κοινοβούλιο ενέκρινε τη δαπάνη 57.000 λιρών για την αγορά της ιδιωτικής συλλογής των πινάκων του τραπεζίτη Τζον Τζούλιους Ανγκερστάιν (John Julius Angerstein). Η συλλογή περιελάμβανε 38 πίνακες, οι οποίοι θα αποτελούσαν τον πυρήνα μιας νέας εθνικής συλλογής, η οποία θα χρησίμευε ως όργανο μόρφωσης και απόλαυσης για όλους τους πολίτες. Η συλλογή επρόκειτο να εκτεθεί στην οικία του Ανγκερστάιν (στον αρ. 100 της Παλ Μαλ) μέχρι να βρεθεί κατάλληλο κτίριο για τη στέγασή της. Σε σύγκριση όμως με εθνικές πινακοθήκες άλλων χωρών, η έκταση της οικίας κρίθηκε ανεπαρκής και προκάλεσε τα ειρωνικά και επικριτικά σχόλια του τύπου.[4] Επιπλέον, καθώς η συλλογή αυξανόταν μέσω νέων αποκτημάτων, ο χώρος ήταν ανεπαρκής για την έκθεση των πινάκων. Έτσι το 1831 αποφασίστηκε, ύστερα από πολλές συζητήσεις, η κατασκευή κτιρίου στην πλατεία Τραφάλγκαρ, ένα σημείο της πόλης προσβάσιμο από όλους, στη θέση των παλαιών Βασιλικών Στάβλων (King's Mews). Το νέο κτίριο, κατασκευασμένο από τον αρχιτέκτονα Ουίλιαμ Ουίλκινς (William Wilkins) άνοιξε τις πύλες του το 1838. Για την κατασκευή ο Ουίλκινς χρησιμοποίησε οκτώ κολώνες προερχόμενες από το παρακείμενο Carlton House που κατεδαφίστηκε το 1826.
Αρχικά το κτίριο της Πινακοθήκης στέγαζε και τη Βασιλική Ακαδημία Τεχνών (Royal Academy of Arts), η οποία μετακινήθηκε σε δικό της κτίριο το 1869. Το ίδιο έτος όμως τέθηκε θέμα περί καταλληλότητας του κτιρίου και ανατέθηκε στον αρχιτέκτονα E.M. Barry η μελέτη κατασκευής νέου κτιρίου. Τελικά αποφασίστηκε το κτίριο να παραμείνει αλλά να κατασκευαστεί επέκταση με νέα πτέρυγα, η οποία ολοκληρώθηκε το 1876 με την προσθήκη επτά νέων αιθουσών και του σημερινού θόλου. Νέα επέκταση έγινε το 1907 με την κατεδάφιση των παραπηγμάτων στην πίσω αυλή του κτιρίου και την ανέγερση πέντε νέων αιθουσών.
Το 1985 ο Λόρδος Σένσμπουρι (Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover) πρότεινε να χρηματοδοτήσει, μαζί με τους αδελφούς του, την ανέγερση νέας πτέρυγας, η οποία κατασκευάστηκε πλάι στο ήδη υπάρχον κτίσμα, έλαβε το όνομα "πτέρυγα Σένσμπουρι" και παραδόθηκε το 1991.
Σήμερα η Εθνική Πινακοθήκη του Λονδίνου διαθέτει αίθουσες συνολικού εμβαδού 46.396 τετ. μ.[4]
Β' Παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος
Πολύ πριν ξεκινήσουν οι τρομοκρατικοί βομβαρδισμοί του Λονδίνου από τη Λουφτβάφε οι Βρετανοί, φοβούμενοι μέχρι και γερμανική απόβαση στα νησιά τους, άρχισαν να εξετάζουν το μέλλον της Πινακοθήκης. Ο τότε διευθυντής της Κένεθ Κλαρκ (Kenneth Clark) έκανε σαφές ότι τα αριστουργήματα που περιλαμβάνονταν στη συλλογή δεν ήταν ασφαλή και έπρεπε να απομακρυνθούν από το κτίριο. Όταν η προοπτική πολέμου με τη Ναζιστική Γερμανία έγινε πλέον σαφής οι 50 πρώτοι πίνακες απομακρύνθηκαν από την πινακοθήκη και μεταφέρθηκαν στο Μπανγκόρ της Ουαλίας (30 Σεπτεμβρίου 1938). Μετά τη Συμφωνία του Μονάχου, οι πίνακες επανήλθαν σχεδόν αυθημερόν. Ένα σχεδόν έτος αργότερα το ενδεχόμενο εκκένωσης της Πινακοθήκης έγινε εκ νέου πραγματικότητα: Δέκα ημέρες πριν την κήρυξη πολέμου μεταξύ Βρετανίας - Γερμανίας, όλοι οι πίνακες απομακρύνθηκαν από το κτίριο και μεταφέρθηκαν:

Στην Εθνική Βιβλιοθήκη της Ουαλίας στο Αμπερίστουϊδ (Aberystwyth)
Στο κάστρο Κάρναρβον (Caernarvon Castle)
Στο κάστρο Πένρυν (Penrhyn Castle)
Στο Τραουσγκουθ (Trawsgoed) (Ουαλία)[5]
Οι θέσεις αυτές θεωρήθηκαν προσωρινές και ακολούθησαν συσκέψεις σχετικά με το πού έπρεπε να φυλαχθούν τα πολύτιμα έργα τέχνης. Υπήρξε ακόμη και σκέψη μεταφοράς τους στον Καναδά, ιδέα που απορρίφθηκε. Τελικά επιλέχθηκε το εγκαταλελειμμένο ορυχείο "Manod" στην περιοχή του Φεστίνιοχ (Ffestiniog), στις στοές του οποίου αποθηκεύτηκαν, καλά συσκευασμένοι, όλοι οι πίνακες.[3].
Όπως απέδειξαν τα γεγονότα, η κίνηση εκκένωσης της πινακοθήκης ήταν σωστή: Στις 12 Οκτωβρίου 1940 μια ισχυρή βόμβα ρίφθηκε στο κτίριο, με αποτέλεσμα την ολική καταστροφή της αίθουσας 10, ακριβώς αυτή στην οποία στεγάζονταν τα έργα του Ραφαήλ. Κατά τη διάρκεια συναυλίας στο κτίριο εξερράγη δεύτερη, μικρότερη βόμβα, η οποία είχε ριφθεί σε προηγούμενη επίθεση, αλλά δεν είχε εκραγεί.[5] Το κτίριο συνέχισε να χρησιμοποιείται, κύρια ως συναυλιακός χώρος και χώρος διαλέξεων, καθ' όλη τη διάρκεια του Πολέμου. Με τη λήξη του διαπιστώθηκε ότι ούτε ένας από τους υαλοπίνακες της οροφής δεν είχε απομείνει ανέπαφος και πέρασαν αρκετά χρόνια μέχρι την πλήρη αποκατάστασή του.
Από το 1942 και καθώς οι βομβαρδισμοί του Λονδίνου είχαν αραιώσει σημαντικά, ορισμένα έργα άρχισαν να μεταφέρονται για προσωρινή έκθεση και πάλι στο κτίριο. Κάθε βράδυ τα αποσπούσαν από το χώρο έκθεσης και τα μετέφεραν στον υπόγειο θωρακισμένο χώρο για πλήρη ασφάλεια. Στις 17 Μαΐου 1945 άρχισαν να μεταφέρονται σταδιακά τα έργα τέχνης στο κτίριο, του οποίου οι ζημίες αποκαταστάθηκαν επίσης σταδιακά.
