Archimedes hydraulic endless screw. Photo : Augusta Stylianou Artist

The hydraulic endless screw
A precise reconstruction of Archimedes' screw that is used even today for the pumping of water of small differences in height. It consists of a wooden axle which has eight convolutions (curves) of thin and flexible willow or wicker twigs (one stuck on top of the other) so that a screw of eight beginnings is created. The screw works within a wooden pipe. The device is placed in the water and an angle of 30 degrees. With the manual rotation of the screw, the water (trapped within its coils) rises and flows from the mouth of the pipe.
