Palamari (Παλαμάρι) Arkadia

Palamari is a settlement in the prefecture of Arcadia at an altitude of 640m. at the beginning of Mainalo. It is located in the center of the Peloponnese.

Together with the settlements of Pavlia, Psari, Syrna, Elliniko and Ano Kalyvakia, they formed the Municipality of Trikala, based in Stemnitsa. With the implementation of the Kallikratis law, it now belongs to the new Kallikratiki Municipality of Gortynia, based in the historical community of Dimitsana, which came from the merger of the former Kapodistrian Municipalities of Vytina, Dimitsana, Trikala, Kleironaros, Lagkadaia and Ignacia, Kontovas. It is located 210 km from Athens, in the middle of the Megalopolis-Stemnitsa route, and is 14 km from Megalopolis and 14 km from Stemnitsa.

History

The only oldest official evidence of the village's existence is reported by Pukeville in 1815, [1] but the area has been cultivated since the first Turkish occupation.

According to the documents of the census of the ecclesiastical estates of Moria, a ruined church was located in the place Palamari, in the region of Avdoulou, a small village that is not mentioned in the statistical sources. It was probably destroyed at the time. Based on the indications, we can assume that in the place of today's village, in the 17th century, there were fields and a settlement named Avdoulou. The village was deserted before 1700 and later revived in the 18th century under the name Palamari. The name Avdoulou still exists today.

During the Turkish occupation, a Turkish Aga had settled in Palamari. The house he lived in existed until the 1965 earthquake, when it collapsed and collapsed. The new one was created in the middle of the 17th century and the choice of location was advantageous over the old one, because it provided a view of the plain, a healthy climate and running water from springs. There was a holy community with monks. Of these, only the holy temple of St. Georgiou, 16th century building, ruins of Ag. Ioannou, which was set on fire during the Revolution of 1821, and others that today survive as place names: Ag. Sunday, St. Nikolaos, Ag. Marina, where a new church has been built on the site of the old one.

At the point where the village was built, the then road axis of Andritsaina, Karytaina, Tripoli passed. Thus, it became an intermediate station, a fact that significantly affected the development of the village, because in addition to their agricultural and livestock activities, many residents were also involved in trade. This is confirmed by the several shops that existed in the village at that time.

In the "Archives of the Greek Palagenesis" (https://paligenesia.parliament.gr) the village of Palamari is mentioned in a Record of the sale of third deciles of the province of Karytinis dated 5/6/1822 (Volume 15c pages 48 and 49)

In the census of 1829, Palamari has 16 families, in 1834 the census of the reign of Otto has 22 families and a population of 126 inhabitants, in 1849 it has 35 families and 177 inhabitants, in the year 1879 it has 210 inhabitants. In 1843 they built the fountain collecting water from the surrounding springs. In 1867, with the help of all the inhabitants, they built the first primary school in the area. In 1885 the construction of the large sanctuary began in place of the small one.

In 1976, the Palamaras living in Athens created the Association of Palamaras Everywhere, in order to strengthen social relations with each other and to strengthen the inhabitants of the village. He started his activity with social events and public works in the village. It starts with widening the road from the boundary of the Zone to Palamari for access by car. All roads in the village are cemented and the old fountain is maintained. He is building a basketball court and on August 15 he is setting up road and basketball games with the participation of young people from the surrounding villages. With actions towards the Archaeological Service, the Old fountain, the well and the school, which is transformed into a Cultural Center, are recognized as historical monuments. He builds a playground, renovates various spaces and buys a concrete mixer and a grass cutting machine for the needs of the residents. In 1985, after funding by Konstantinos Christopoulos, he founded an institution named after him, in order to strengthen the village and build a monument in his honor.
