Palaiomanina (Παλαιομάνινα) Aitoloakarnania

Palaiomanina is a lowland village in Xiromero of the regional unit of Aitoloakarnania at an altitude of 120 meters [1].

Geography - History

Palaiomanina is located on the west bank of the Acheloos, between Lake Ozeros and the lagoon of Aetoliko. It is 25 km northwest of Astakos and 33.5 km NW. from Messolonghi. The village is located on the eastern border of Velanidodasos Xiromerou which is considered the most organized oak forest (Quercus macrolepis) in Greece and has been characterized as a landscape of special natural beauty - TIFK. It is the hilly limestone area between the villages of Skourtou, Prodromos, Stroggylovouni, Paleomanina, Rigani, Gouriotissa and Lake Ozerou [2].

According to tradition, it was created after the permanent installation of the Vlach (or Armani) Latin-speaking nomadic-breeders who used the area for their winters [3]. The modern village, according to archaeologist Professor V. Lambrinoudakis, was built on the outskirts of an archaic city that is believed to have been the Acarnanian Diocese. To the northwest are the citadel ruins of classical times with a characteristic vaulted gate and a wall with a double mantle. Very close to the site "Mila" to Pentalofos were found stolen Mycenaean tombs [4] [5].

Name - Administrative

As a settlement it is mentioned with the name Palaiomanina in 1845 to be annexed to the then municipality of Oiniados. In 1912 with the Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912 to be detached from the municipality of Oiniados and to be appointed seat of the community of Palaiomanina [6]. According to the Kallikratis plan, it is the local community of Palaiomanina that belongs to the municipal unit of Astakos of the Municipality of Xiromeros and according to the 2011 census has a population of 754 inhabitants [7].
