Paleokastritsa (Greek: Παλαιοκαστρίτσα meaning Old Castle place, referring to nearby Angelokastro) is a former municipality on the island of Corfu, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Corfu, of which it is a municipal unit.[1] It has a land area of 48.379 km² and a population of 4,395 (2001 census) and is located on the west coast of Corfu just south of Angelokastro. The seat of the municipality was the town of Lakones (pop. 502). The largest villages are Liapádes (pop. 958), Doukádes (678), Skriperó (642), and Lákones.

Corfu is considered to be the mythical island of the Phaeacians.

Palaiokastritsa

Doukades

Doukades is a village 20 km NW of Kerkyra city. The name acccording to a version is derived from the family name Doukas found in a list of names from 1616. The village was declared as a "preserved traditional settlement". Some of the interesting building are the mansion of Theotokis, the school at the entrance to the village.


History

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, many of its buildings were rebuilt.

Other

Paleokastritsa has several schools, a lyceum (middle school), a gymnasium (secondary school), a few churches, a post office, and a square (plateia). The village has no school, its nearest are in Lakones and Liapades.

On a nearby hill there is a monastery, dating to 1225. There is a museum inside.
