Olbia, "the city of wealth", Ukraine is the site of Pontic Olbia in the Crimea, a colony founded 645 BC from Miletus on the shores of the Southern Bug estuary, which lasted for a thousand years. Before 1902, the counts Musins-Pushkins forbade archaeology on their estate. Professional excavations were begun under Farmakovsky in the 1930s. Today archaeologists are under pressure to excavate the site, which is being eroded by the Black Sea.
