Regional unit : Heraklion

  • Nyvritos (Νύβριτος) Heraklion
  • Nyvritos (formerly written: Nivritos) is a settlement and homonymous municipal district in the Municipality of Gortyna with 255 inhabitants in 2001. It is built at the southern foot of Mount Ambelakia (altitude 1,445 m). Its location is at the 42nd kilometer of the road to Zaros. It used to belong to the municipality of Rouva in the province of Kainourgio. The main occupation of the inhabitants is olive growing, animal husbandry and the collection of the aromatic plant sage (medicinal eel, Salvia officinalis). It is supplied with water from a spring near the village. Inside the village in Piso Vrysi there is a huge plane tree.

The Drosoi, who are uninhabited, also belong to the Municipal Department.

    Historical data

The name of the village is pre-Greek and the most correct spelling is Nivritos [1] In 1583 it is mentioned as Ivrito with 210 inhabitants [2] and in Basilicata it is mentioned Gnivirto [3]

The church of Panagia is the most important and celebrates on September 8. Also in the northwest we see above the village, in the steep position of Kalyves, inside a cave, the small church of Agios Methodios, who practiced inside the cave. The area is overgrown with pines. Part of the relics of the Saint were transferred during the Turkish occupation to the holy monastery of Epanosifi, where they are today. His memory is celebrated on June 25. His diploma mentions the name [4] of the village.
