Morfovouni (Μορφοβούνιον) Karditsa

Morfovouni (old name: Vounesi) is a Greek mountain village that belongs administratively to the Municipality of Lake Plastira in the Prefecture of Karditsa. It is the birthplace of the general and politician Nikolaos Plastiras, the writer Antonis Samarakis and the hero pilot pilot Georgios Baltadorou. It is located north of the artificial lake Megdova and from the village are visible Karditsa and Trikala. The population of the settlement amounts to 485 inhabitants.

It is about 22 km from Karditsa. It is the largest village of the Municipality of Plastira, which was established with the Kallikratis Program by the merger of the pre-existing municipalities of Nevropolis and Plastira, and has been designated as its seat. According to the 2011 census, the Municipality of Plastira has 4,635 permanent residents.

Its inhabitants are engaged in traditional farming, viticulture, etc. The village is built at an altitude of 840 meters, has large areas of chestnut forests and oak forest. From all over the village the view of the Thessalian plain is endless.

In the village there is also the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, which is built in an idyllic location in the north of the village. Although a newer building - founded by the monk Athanasios of Gralista (Ellinopyrgos) in 1858 - it is a rare example of the survival of the Byzantine tradition, as it retains the complete form of the Mount Athos type with a dome. It is surrounded by a fortified enclosure, while the cells have been destroyed. The western wing housed a sanatorium during the period 1938–1943, which was a pioneering example of the social policy of the then Metropolitan Ezekiel.

Sightseeing of the place is the museum "Plastira", located near the center of Morfovouni.
