The ruins of Bonriparo Castle

Monopari is located on the border with the Regional Unit of Chania at a distance of 15 km SW. from the city of Rethymnon. The village is built west of the provincial road Rethymno - Agia Galini, between the settlements of Ano Valsamonero (V.) and Kato Malaki (SW). The name of the village comes from the corruption of the name Castello Bonriparo, the fort that existed northwest of the current hill "Kastelo". In Italian Bon Riparo means "good fortress" or "strong fortress". According to one version, the castle was built when, in 1206, part of Crete was occupied by the pirate and Earl of Malta, Henry Pescatore, as leader of the Genoese, and fortified it with 15 fortresses. According to another, it had already been built during the Byzantine era during the Komnenos (1185) and was called the "tower of Melissina". The history of the fortress is also related to the revolution of "Two Sivrites", which lasted 19 years (1217-1236) between the two current mountainous provinces of Rethymno Amari - Agios Vassilios or the families of Skordili - Melissina. [2]

Administratively

As a settlement, it is officially mentioned in 1925 in the Government Gazette 27A - 31/01/1925 to be annexed to the then community of Ano Varsamonerou. [3] According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Ano Valsamonero they constitute the local community of Ano Valsmonerou that belongs to the municipal unit of Nikiforos Fokas of the Municipality of Rethymno and according to the 2011 census has a permanent population of 30 inhabitants.
