Manina Vlizianon (Μάνινα Βλιζιανών) Aitoloakarnania

Manina Vlizianon [1] or Manina Vlyzanon [2] or Vlyzianitika Pigadia [3] or Pigadia is a lowland village in Xiromero of the regional unit of Aitoloakarnania at an altitude of 90 meters [1].

Geography - History

Manina Vlizianon is located west of the river Acheloos at a distance of 19 km from Astakos and 36 km SW. from Agrinio. It is built in the area of ​​Velanidodasos Xiromerou which is considered the most organized oak forest (Quercus macrolepis) in Greece, has joined the NATURA 2000 Network and has been characterized as a landscape of special natural beauty - TIFK [4]. At the southeastern end of the village is the cemetery chapel of Agios Nikolaos. It is a building of 1872, where according to local tradition during the Revolution of 1821 George Karaiskakis had a victorious clash with the Turks. On February 12, 1828, a battle took place between a small Greek force led by General Richard Chorts and a multiple enemy of the Turkalvans of Veli Bey.

The first inhabitants were mainly Nomads from Epirus from Matsouki, Ioannina and the area of ​​Tzoumerka as well as some Evrytanians. Their occupations today are agriculture, animal husbandry (pig farming) and they have advanced infrastructure, but also a fairly developed local economy [3].

Administratively

It is mentioned as a settlement in 1845 in the Government Gazette 32A - 08/12/1845 with the name Manina Vlyzanon being attached to the then municipality of Astakos. In 1912, with the Government Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912, it was corrected to Manina Vlyzanon or Kalentzi [2]. According to the Kallikratis plan, it is the local community of Strongylovouni that belongs to the municipal unit of Astakos of the Municipality of Xiromeros and according to the 2011 census has a population of 170 inhabitants [5].
