Manesi (Μανέσι) Achaia

Manesi (officially: Manesion) is a local community of the Municipality of Kalavryta. It includes the settlements of Manesi and Mpoumpouka.

Designation

The name of the village Manesi comes from the first-born Manesi, who came from the Manesi family, to which the name Manesi is due in many parts of Greece. There are still many families today with the name "Manesis".

History

The history of the village of Manesi dates back to 1465 AD. The first inhabitants of the village lived in the current location "Palio Manesi", where some ruins survive. "Palio Manesi" is located at the foot of Erymanthos above the springs of the tributary of Selinountas "Michni".

During the Peloponnese census by the Venetians in 1700, the village was inhabited by 12 families, which had 48 people. During the Turkish occupation, ie from 1715 to 1821, they settled in the present-day Manesi. Many militant villagers who fought in Kalavrita, Levidi, Tripolitsa, Akrata, Patras, etc. took part in the Revolution. Manesi is home to Nikaia and Papadimitraia who excelled during the "Holy Struggle".

After her release in 1928, she had a full Greek school, with 56 students.

In 1914, after the dissolution of the Municipalities, when it became a Community, it had 562 inhabitants. It had a transitional court, a police station, a post office, a telegraph office, a rural doctor's office. There were also 5 grocery stores, 2 cheese shops, 2 ironworks. The life of the Monastery was short. Faithful women, however, have recently renovated and operated it. Today the small katholikon and its precinct as well as various temple ruins are preserved.
