  • Lygaria is a lowland village of the Regional Unit of Serres with an altitude of 30 meters [1].

    Geography - History

Lygaria is located in the plain of Serres at a distance of 13 km NW. of Nigrita and 17 km SW. of Serres. The village is built south of the river Strymon, north of the stream Skapanis shortly before it ends in Strymon, between the neighboring Dimitritsi (NW) and Sisamia (SW). Its old name is Mergiani [2] which comes from the word "Meras", meaning pasture, where the first inhabitants first grazed their animals. The area was swampy and when it flooded and destroyed their homes in 1925, they moved to the current location of the settlement. After the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the Greek-Turkish population exchange of 1923, many refugees from Eastern Thrace settled in the village, more specifically from the villages of Duankioui, Tatarkioui and Mastanari. The village is officially mentioned in 1920 in the Official Gazette 2A - 04/01/1920 as Mergianni to be attached to the then community of Dimitritsi. In 1927 with the Official Gazette 179A - 30/08/1927 it was renamed Lygaria [4]. According to the plan, Kallikratis constitutes the Local Community of Lygaria, which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Visaltia of the Municipality of Visaltia and according to the 2011 census has a population of 284 inhabitants [5].
