  • Lagouta is a village in the municipality of Minoa Pediada, in the regional unit of Heraklion, Crete. According to the 2011 census it has 50 inhabitants. It is 48 km from Heraklion and 18 km from Arkalochori. It is built at an altitude of 250 m. [2] on the slopes of Papoura hill, between the rivers Anapodiari and Inioti. The economy of the village is agricultural, with the main products being olive oil, viticulture and vegetables. [3] In the past, citrus was cultivated. The name probably comes from the Laouto (lute) musical instrument.


    Historical data

    The earliest written reference to Lagouta is made in a contract of 1271, where it is referred to as Lauta. It is also mentioned in a contract written in Greek in 1373 as Lavouta and in a document of 1374 of the Duchess archive as Lauta. [2] Francesco Barocci in 1577 refers to it as Laguta in the province of Belvedere or Rizou. In the Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofylakas it is mentioned as Lagura with 107 inhabitants. Francesco Vasilicata in 1630 mentions it as Laguta, while in the Ottoman census of 1671 it is mentioned with the same name and had 12 engravings. [2]

    The 1834 census, conducted by the Egyptians, had a Muslim population, with 14 families. In the 1881 census, Laguta had a purely Muslim population, with 150 inhabitants, and belonged to the municipality of Skinia. In the 1900 census it belonged to the same municipality and had 18 inhabitants. In 1920 it belonged to the rural municipality of Skinia. [2] In 1925 it was annexed to the community of Skinia, where it remained until the Kapodistrias program was annexed to the municipality of Arkalochori. [4]

    Points of interest

    At the entrance of the settlement is the grove of Lagoutas (since 1968). It is the largest grove in the municipality of Minoa Pediada, with an area of ​​about 80 acres. In the grove area, which includes pines, there are tables and a playground. At the top of the grove is the building of the former Lagoutas primary school, which now houses the cultural association. Also, near the northeastern end of the settlement, there is the small folklore museum of Lagouta. In the settlement is the church of the Holy Cross. [3]
