Lagoudi-Zia (Λαγούδι-Ζια ) Kos

Lagoudi - Zia is a semi-mountainous village on the island of Kos in the Dodecanese, it is the highest inhabited point at an altitude of 240 meters [1] and is actually 2 settlements together [2].

Geography - History

Lagoudi - Zia is located in the northeastern part of the island, on the slope of Mount Dikaios (Oromedon) and is about 14 km SW. from the city of Kos [3]. It is surrounded by cypress and pine forests, olive groves and scattered oaks, as well as several water springs gushing from the mountain.

The village was recognized as a settlement in 1961 and annexed to the then community of Asfendio, while from 1997 to 2010 it belonged to the municipality of Dikaio [4]. According to the plan, Kallikratis belongs to the Municipal Community of Law of the Municipality of Kos and according to the 2011 census it has 151 inhabitants [5].

Sights

From Zia, the whole island of Kos, Kalymnos and the coasts of Asia Minor are visible, which are a pole of attraction for Greek and foreign tourists of the island. The settlement follows the classic island road and architecture. On the main street of the village there are several shops with traditional and handmade products, from classic souvenirs to spices and traditional pastries [6] [7].

Interesting sights of the area are the church of Agios Ioannis the Theologian which is built in the rocks and the small church of Profitis Ilias at the top of a nearby small hill [8] [9]. There is also the watermill of Ioannis Hatziantonis (going to Zia) and the watermill of Cassius (in Zia), which have been characterized as "historically preserved monuments" [10].
