Kato Chora (Κάτω Χώρα) Aitoloakarnania

Kato Chora is a mountain village in the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania in the municipality of Nafpaktia at an altitude of 890 meters. Administratively it was connected with the neighboring Ano Chora. In the period 1912-1996, however, it was the seat of a separate community, the community of Kato Chora [2]. Since 1997, according to the Kallikratis program, it has been the Local Community of Kato Chora, which belongs to the Municipal Unit of Efficiency of the Municipality of Nafpaktia and its population according to the 2011 census is 41 inhabitants [3].

Geography - History

Kato Chora is located a little lower than Ano Chora, on the southern slopes of the Kerasovouni mountaintop, between two torrents that join at the Karatuba mill and form the Lombotian stream which ends at the Kotsalos tributary. It is 56 km NE of Nafpaktos and only 3.5 km from Ano Chora. It has several tourist infrastructures and beautiful hiking trails such as the Kotsalos gorge between Kato and Ano Chora.

History

The village was created between the years 1454 and 1550 by residents of an older village in the place "Paliochoria" where some moved to it and others to Ano Chora [4]. Its original name was Mikra Lombotina, and the French traveler François Pouqueville mentions it, during the Turkish occupation, between the villages of the Kravara region inhabited by 15 families. It was renamed Kato Chora in 1928 with the Official Gazette: 81/1928 [7]. He mentions, in 1815, that he found the ruins of an old monastery called Trimorfo, that is, Agia Triada, which once had 340 monks and was built by Domitios and is obviously connected to the current chapel of Agia Triada in the north of the village. In the wider area, several finds have been found (tombs, ceramic tiles and vertebrae from a temple column) that show its ancient habitat [4].
