Geroplatanos (Γεροπλάτανος) Chalkidiki

Geroplatanos is a village in the homonymous Municipal District of the Municipality of Polygyros (formerly owned by the Municipality of Zervochoria), in the prefecture of Chalkidiki. Its location is on the outskirts of Mount Holomontas.

Etymology

The name of the village is due to the centuries-old plane tree (Platanus orientalis), which has a height of 20 m and a perimeter of 15 m and is located in the village square. It has even been declared a natural monument in 1976. Its branches are huge and there is a spring at its roots. [3]

History

In 1854 the Holocaust of the Geroplatanos took place by the Turks in retaliation for the outbreak of the Revolution in Halkidiki. Then six young girls from Geroplatanos testified, whom the Turks burned alive. The Church recognized them as new martyrs and their memory is commemorated in the Parish of Agios Dimitrios Geroplatanos on the first Sunday of May every year. [4]

Culture

The cultural association called "AES Geroplatanou" organizes cultural and sports events all year round. The church of Panagia is a sight to behold, in a location overgrown with plane trees, holly trees and walnuts.

Sport

The A.E.S. football team GEROPLATANOU during the 2018-19 season competed in the 3rd Amateur Category of Ε.Π.Σ. Of Halkidiki. [5]

Churches

The three-aisled basilica of Agios Dimitrios, which is another monument in the village, dates from 1836.
