Eleftherochori (Ελευθεροχώρι) Ioannina

Eleftherochori is a mountain village in the former province of Dodoni in Epirus in the prefecture of Ioannina at an altitude of 610 meters.

Geography - History

Eleftherochori is built on the southern slopes of the Kourenta Mountains, on the provincial road Kourenta - Psina and southeast of Polygyros. It is located southwest of the city of Ioannina at a distance of 27 km, east of Igoumenitsa at 58 km and 8 km north of the Tyria junction of Egnatia Odos [2]. According to local tradition, it was named Eleftherochori because during the Turkish occupation it did not pay taxes to the Turks. The Byzantine church of Agios Georgios, built in 1770 with remarkable frescoes and inscriptions, is considered a landmark of the wider area. It is a three-aisled four-column basilica with a dome and a four-pitched roof, while its side parts are covered by semi-cylindrical arches. It has been a historic monument since 1965. According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Polygyros, they constitute the local community of Polygyros that belongs to the municipal unit of Dodoni of the Municipality of Dodoni and according to the 2011 census has a population of 20 inhabitants [5].
