Elati (Greek: Ελάτη )

Elati, whose old name is Louziani [1], is a village in the prefecture of Kozani [2]. It is located at the southern end of the prefecture on the border with the Prefecture of Grevena and Larissa.

The village is built on the roots of the mountain "Bonassia" or Mount Kamvounia. The mountain is forested and is dominated by the fir tree that obviously gave its current name to the village. According to the 2011 census, there are 415 residents living in the village [3], while many have moved to urban centers.

Administratively, until 31/12/1998, Elati was a Community. With the Kapodistrias Program he joined the Municipality of Kamvounia and then with the Kallikratis Program he joined the Municipality of Serbia-Velventou. From 2019, with the Kleisthenis I Program and the Government Gazette 43A - 09/03/2019, it was attached to the reconstituted municipality of Serbia. [4]

History

Near the village, in the place "Tourniki", located on the bank of a tributary of Aliakmonas, the remains of an ancient settlement were pointed out, which seems to have controlled the natural passage leading from this mountainous area of Elimiotida to the plain of Diminitsa [5].

The village is found in the code of Zavorda in 1532 under the name Louziani. There are 334 baptisms with the first script and 293 with the second.

Luziani is a Bulgarian word and means "vineyard". According to an article by KA Gounaropoulos in PANDORA magazine: "These names, of course, were used by the Bulgarians from the 6th century" (a village called Louziani existed in the 6th century).

The village is the birthplace of two settlements, Stefanis and Paliochoras, located east of the current location. According to tradition, the inhabitants of the two settlements killed each other when they met at the "Rougatziaria" custom at the "Palikaria" location. According to custom, they did not have to meet. But if he met, they would fight to the end.

This is how the residents justify the disappearance of the two settlements and the creation of the new village by those who remained in the current position.

This place was preferred as the most suitable because it dominates the surrounding area, has water sources and has several cultivable areas around.

In 1872 the village was inhabited by 80 Greek Christian families. In 1901 it had 127 families and in 1906, 751 inhabitants. In 1907 it had 127 families and 780 inhabitants. In 1933, Luziani was renamed Elati, apparently due to the fir forest that stretches over the village, on Mount Bounasia.

The forest

South of the village extends the imposing forest of Elati which belongs to the community of Elati according to full prefecture and ownership.

Its total area is 2,159 hectares. Throughout the mountain there are firs (hybrid trees) broadleaf oak and in the cooler areas we find the Eastern plane tree. In 1945 a large fire destroyed 1,500 acres of fir and oak forests.

The Monastery of Zavorda

Opposite the village and in an imposing location above Aliakmonas is the monastery of Zavorda or the Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior. The monastery belongs to the Holy Diocese of Grevena. The monastery was founded by Saint Nicanor from Thessaloniki (1532 or 1534) next to a Byzantine church of Agios Georgios. The catholic of the Monastery was decorated with frescoes attributed to the Theban painter Frangos Katelanos. According to tradition, the name Zavorda is due to the Turkish pasha of the area who had his child sick. When Saint Nicanor helped him do well, the Turk told Saint Nicanor "Za Varda", which means above all. [7]
