Regional unit : Messinia

Akritochori (Ακριτοχώρι) Messinia

Akritochori, [4] officially referred to as Akritochori and formerly as Grizi, is a semi-mountainous settlement between Methoni and Koroni and is administratively part of the Municipality of Pylos - Nestoros, in the Regional Unit of Messinia.

Location

Akritochori is located southeast of Methoni from which it is about 15 kilometers, west of Koroni from which it is about 13 kilometers and southeast of Pylos from which it is about 24 kilometers. It is located on the 13th Provincial Road Charakopiou - Methoni, [5] has an altitude of 225 [1] [6] meters and is about 3.5 km from the sea. Near Akritochori are located to the west Loutsa at a distance of less than 3 km, to the northwest Grizokambos at a distance of about 4 km and to the northeast Yamia at a distance of about 2.5 km respectively.
History

The village has a long history that follows the history of Messinia and the wider region of Methoni, Koroni and Pylia. The area of the village in antiquity was a border point between ancient Methoni and Asini, the ancient city, which later developed as modern Koroni. The village has been mentioned at least since the time of the Venetian occupation under the name Grizi or Grichi. Some of the inhabitants of the village come from Arcadian cattle breeders, also known as the "ascendants and descendants", a name formerly given to these shepherds, as in the spring they went up with their herds to Arcadia, while in winter they went down to the winters of Messinia. [7]

Second Venetian rule

Main entry: Territory of Methoni

In the days of the Second Venetian occupation, it was referred to as Grizi or Chrichi (Grichi [8] or Chrichi [9]). The settlement also refers to various censuses of the Venetian Providers of the Most Peaceful Republic of Venice, which were made during the period of thirty years (1683 / 84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. The village of Grichi (Grichi), belonged, in 1689, to the province of Methoni (Territorio di Modon), which was one of the 4 provinces, which then divided the department of Methoni (province of Fanari, province of Arcadia, province of Navarino and province Methoni). Based on the Venetian Corner census of 1689, the village had 16 inhabitants. [8]
Recent history

According to the local history researcher Stavros P. Tsonis, in his book "Grizokampos: A strange village", in Akritochori (Grizi) settled "ups and downs" from Arcadia, who went there mainly from about the same starting point and having surnames , such as Salantis, Moutzouris etc. [10]. Housing in the village of Grizi was created from time to time by residents from other neighboring villages, such as Saratsa and Vasilitsi, who later took root in the village (Angelopoulos, Kouvelas, etc.). [10] Akritochori had developed into a remarkable village, long before they came down to it, around 1800, the Tsonai, a large and well-known family of the area, also originating from Arcadia, which family extended mainly to the neighboring Grizokampos, which was formerly referred to as the Tsonika or Tsonaika. Two of the three brothers of this family, Lambros Tsonis and Fotis Tsonis, settled in Akritochori, while the third brother, Stamatis Tsonis, from whom most of today's Tsonians come, moved to Grizokampos. The Akritochorites Tzonaios, as relatives of the Grizokambites, occupied and cultivated important parts of the most fertile plain of this area. [10]

Akritochori, as it was approximately in the middle of the route, between the castles of Methoni and Koroni, was, from time to time and repeatedly attacked by various Ottoman siege troops and mainly by Ibrahim's troops, [11] during its course with the aim of the siege of Koroni, where he met strong resistance from militants of the wider area. [10]
The earthquake of 2008

The settlement of Akritochori suffered various damages from the strong earthquake of 6.7 on the Richter scale, on February 14, 2008, focusing on Koroni, which hit the wider region of Messinia. During the earthquake in Koroni, there were water supply problems in the village, when the water turned red, which was attributed to the vertical displacement of the drilling, while there was a safe detachment of the bell tower from the rest of the village church. The damage was repaired after a short time. [12]

Administrative history

Grizi [13] was annexed in 1835, [14] to the old Municipality of Kolonida, [15] with its seat in Koroni, where it remained, until 1912, when this municipality was abolished. At least from 1844 to 1927 the village was officially referred to as Grizi, while from 1927 until today it is referred to as Akritochori. The village is mentioned, in 1853, also as Grizi in the second volume of "Elliniko" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis, as a village of the Municipality of Kolonides of the Province of Pylia with a population of 14 inhabitants, based on the census of 1851. [16] In 1912 [17] the village was annexed as a settlement to the Community of Kaplani, [18] based in Kaplani. The settlements of Valtsuka (now Exochoiko), Zizanion and Tsaizi (now Yamia) were also annexed to the same community. In 1927 [19] Grizi was officially renamed Akritochorion, while in 1948 [20] Akritochorion was separated from the Community of Kaplani and was designated as the seat of the Community of Akritochori. [21] Akritochorion remained as a settlement and seat of the Community of Akritochori, from 1948 to 1997, when then, in the context of the changes that occurred in the local government, through the "Kapodistrias" plan, Akritochorion was subordinated to the abolished Municipality of Koroni, [22] [ 23] based in Koroni, until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, Akritochoriion now belongs to the new Municipality of Pylos - Nestoros. [24] [25] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program with the merger of the pre-existing Municipalities of Koroni, Methoni, Papaflessa, Pylos, Nestoros and Chiliochorion. Akritochorion today is the seat and the only settlement of the Community of Akritochori of the Municipality of Pylos-Nestoros. [4]

Residents

The settlement, based on the 2011 Census, has 195 permanent residents, who are mainly employed in various agricultural activities, with the cultivation of organic products [26] and mainly with the production of olive oil. [27]
