Aetos (Αετός) Aitoloakarnania

Aetos (Aitos) is a semi-mountainous village of the Peripheral Unit of Aitoloakarnania at an altitude of 260 meters [1].

Geography - History

Aetos is located in Xiromero, southwest of Katouna at a distance of 52 km SE. from Vonitsa and 38 km NW. from Agrinio. It is built at the foot of the Akarnanian Mountains and on the stony hillside "Boumistos" overlooking the valley of Xiromeros. Administratively, it is part of the municipality of Aktio-Vonitsa and is the only village in the local community of Aetos and according to the 2011 census, has a population of 480 inhabitants [2]. Near the village is the Byzantine Castle of the Eagle, built in the 4th to 6th century, at the same time as the village, to deal with the barbaric raids of the Huns, Visigoths, Avars, etc. During the period of the Despotate of Epirus (around 1250) its fortification was completed and completed [3].
