Syngraphe (συγγραφή).

A written contract as distinguished from συνθήκη and συμβόλαιον, which may be verbal, and from ὁμολογία, which is regularly verbal in its nature. At Athens all important contracts were made in writing (e. g. leases, loans, and agreements involving specific conditions), and the tablet containing them (βιβλίον, γραμματεῖον, or if double, δίπτυχον) was deposited with a third person mutually agreed upon as its custodian.
