38b,

The TR7 Sprint was a development of the Triumph TR7 fitted with the 16 valve engine from the Dolomite sprint. Even though it never entered full production a number of TR7 Sprints were homologated and subsequently entered into Rallying events and proved competitive on asphalt winning a number of events including the Belgian Boucles de Spa rally in 1977 before ultimately being replaced by the TR8.

Official information on the TR7 Sprint is sparse as records have been lost although all TR7 Sprints are known to have chassis numbers prefixed with letters ACH. The first Sprint produced had commission number ACH1F and was Registered WAC 274S. The V5 registration does not mention TR7s, it does show "TRIUMPH" under ‘Make’ and under ‘Model / Type’ "2 AXLE RIGID BODY SPORTS or COUPE".

The TR7 Sprint was ready for full production when the strike at Speke in late 1977 / early 1978 resulted in TR7 production being moved to Canley and the cancelling of this TR7 variant. However a small number of pre-production TR7 Sprints were in fact manufactured between February and October 1977. Estimates as to the size of this run vary from 25 to 60. Those that were manufactured had the 1978 Fixed head coupe body with very minor detailing to Differentiate them from the standard TR7 in the form of TR7 Sprint badges on the nose cone and boot lid and a side stripe running along the side. They were fitted with either standard steel wheels with full plastic covers or the pewter-coloured GKN-made alloys.

The TR Drivers Club have a record of 20 known survivors (2005).
