Square Rigged Caravel

Type of ship used by the Portuguese navigators from the end of the 15th century to the middle of the 17th century. She was the result of the need to adapt the latin caravel to the long oceanic routes in which the winds blew regularly and from astem. Under these conditions the square sail provided a considerable increase in speed. No plans of this kind of ship have reached our days. The present model has been based on references made by Father Fernando de Oliveira in his work Arte de Guerra no Mar (The Art of War at Sea) printed in 1556 and also on investigations conducted by experts and mainly based on descriptions, bas reliefs, paintings and printings at its time
