The Lyre, Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo actually built a number of musical instruments. One was a silver lyre, in the form
of his patron Ludovico Il Moro. Unfortunately no trace of it was ever found; however
in our search we found in the Manuscript Ashburnham a drawing of a similar instrument in the form
of a grotesque creature. We set about reconstructing it and to our gread surprise, discovered
some unexpected results, for example we noticed that the curved horns on the frontal
area of the lyre provided a very comfortable holding position between the elbow and the arm
leaving the other hand free to play the instrument. In addition, to obtain a good resonance
it was necessaru to fuse the bronze with a good percentage of silver (as is done with bells)
and to support it with willow wood to sweeten the sound, it produced sounds we had not experienced
before.

Η Λύρα.

Ο Λεονάρντο έφτιαξε συγκεκριμένα μια σειρά από μουσικά όργανα. Ένα από αυτά ήταν μια ασημένια λύρα σε σχήμα κρανίου, για τον προστάτη του Λουδοβίκου ΙΙ Μόρο. Δυστυχώς, δεν βρέθηκαν ποτέ ίχνη της. Ωστόσο στις έρευνες που διεξήγαμε, βρέθηκε στο χειρόγραφο ΄Ασμπερναμ, ένα σχέδιο με παρόμοιο όργανο σε σχήμα αυτού του αλλόκοτου πλάσματος. Στην πορεία της ανακατασκευής της προς μεγάλη μας έκπληξη, ανακαλύψαμε κάποια απροσδόκητα αποτελέσματα. Για παράδειγμα έχουμε παρατηρήσει ότι τα καμπύλα κέρατα στην μετωπιαία περιοχή της λύρας παρέχουν μια πολύ άνετη θέση του χεριού μεταξύ του αγκώνα και του μπράτσου, αφήνοντας το άλλο χέρι ελεύθερο για να παίξει το όργανο. Επιπλέον, για να πετύχουμε έναν καλό ήχο ήταν αναγκαίο να λιώσουμε χαλκό εμπλουτισμένο με ένα καλό ποσοστό ασημιού (όπως γίνεται με τις καμπάνες) και στην προσπάθεια μας να την ενισχύσουμε με ξύλο ιτιάς για να γλυκάνει ο ήχος, παρήγαγε τέτοιους ήχους που ήταν πραγματικά πρωτόγνωροι.
