Phil Alain is a Canadian painter known partly for his work on "Lewis Lavoie's Mural Mosaic project," a collaborative mural with contributions from participants such as William Shatner, The Barenaked Ladies' Kevin Hearn, and the Premier of Alberta at the time, Ralph Klein. Alain has showcased both his own work and the work of others through an arts event of his creation called Night of Artists, and is also the founder of the arts magazine NOA Magazine.

Career

Alain began his art career at the age of 13 in St. Albert, Alberta, Canada when his artwork was featured as the full cover image of the Canwest publication The Edmonton Journal. Alain took correspondence courses in art from the Minneapolis, Minnesota Art Instruction School at the age of 15. In 1988-90 he attended the University of Alberta in the B.F.A. program. In 1992 he received a scholarship to carry on his studies in Grande Prairie at the Grande Prairie Regional College in the Fine Arts Program.

In 1997 after years of solo gallery showings and various group shows Alain created his own arts event called Night of Artists.[1][2] It began as a solo show featuring new works by Alain and live music. In 2003 Alain expanded the show across western Canada and not only showcased his own work but also the work of over 70 Canadian artists. In 2005 Alain again expanded the show across Canada. It is now an annual arts events in many Canadian cities.

In 2003, Alain founded NOA Magazine, the national arts magazine for Night of Artists. This magazine has a distribution base of 10,000 issues annually.[1]

Alain was commissioned to create a mural for NHL Hall of Famer legend Grant Fuhr from the Edmonton Oilers for the city of Spruce Grove, and has designed three record covers for world champion quartet Realtime,[3] world champion chorus Lions Gate[4] and multiple record covers for German Blues record label Ruf Records. The first is a compilation titled Blues Guitar Women by Sue Foley;[5] the second was the Ruf Anthology.[6]

Alain also directed the Guitar Women shows across Canada from 2004-2007 based around the Sue Foley Guitar Woman book project and also was the designer of the Guitar Woman Logo.[7]
Mural Mosaic project

Alain has had international attention with his art projects including the collaborative "Lewis Lavoie's Mural Mosaic project"[8][9] which he co-produces with Lewis Lavoie and Paul Lavoie. Alain along with mural designer Lewis Lavoie and co-producer Paul Lavoie were special guests of Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Visit in Edmonton, Alberta as they presented the mural to Her Majesty the Queen. The website www.muralmosaic.com is considered one of the highest traffic art websites in the world with over 23 million visitors from September 2007 to December 2008. Participants in the murals include Robert Bateman, The Barenaked Ladies' Kevin Hearn, The David Letterman Late Show Orchestra's Felicia Collins, William Shatner, Bill Lishman, Alberta Premier Ralph Klein and Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert.

The Mural Mosaic team has created murals at the:

- 2010 Winter Olympics in West Vancouver BC, 3914

- The 2012 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede for the Bank of Montreal [3]

- The 2012 Summer Olympics in London as part of an Alberta contingent led by former premier Allison Redford,[4]

- The Chicago Illinois Million lights festival in 2013 [5]

- The Canada Summer Games Mural mosaic in Sherbrooke Quebec in 2013 [6]

- South Jordan City Hall Utah United States of America Flag Mural mosaic [7]

- The Canada 150 Mosaic project to unite Canada from 2015-2017 ongoing [8]
