Gero-Codex Scene: Initial S

The Gero-Codex is the oldest of medieval manuscripts that can be attributed to the reputed schools of the monastery of Reichenau. It was probably made around the year 969 for later Archbishop of Cologne, Gero. The manuscript is an outstanding example of the Ottonian book illumination and was included in the list of world cultural heritage by UNESCO. It is a Gospel Book or pericope book containing the Gospels of the liturgical year. It was compiled so that it contained the necessary for the Holy Mass parts of the Gospels and could be used during the liturgy. The manuscript is now kept in the University and State Library Darmstadt under the signature HS. 1948.
