Johan Mari Henri ten Kate (The Hague, March 4, 1831 - Driebergen, March 26, 1910) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist. He worked in the style of romance.

Life and work

Mari Ten Kate was a brother and student of Herman ten Kate. He also studied at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague and at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He worked in Oosterbeek, Elst and Marken and made study trips to Paris, Italy, England and in 1883-1884 to Java, where he made a lot of graphic work.

Ten Kate painted in the style of romance and worked in both oil and watercolor. He mainly made genre works and figure pieces with one with children, which he strongly idealized, virtuous and in a natural simplicity that was very different from reality at the time. He also painted landscapes, beach scenes and hunting scenes. Many of his works have a strong narrative character.

Ten Kate became a member of the Royal Academy of Art in Amsterdam in 1852. He was friends with King William III and was appointed an officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau and commander of the Order of the Oak Crown. During his later career he made several works on behalf of the Royal House.

Ten Kate was the father and teacher of Johannes Marius ten Kate and a brother of minister poet Jan Jakob Lodewijk ten Kate. In 1910 he died, aged 79. His works are among others in the collections of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, the Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen and the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo. There are also some hunting scenes from his hand in the Royal collection.
