Heinrich Pommerencke (1821–1873) was a successful German portrait painter of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. He was born in 1821 and brought up in poverty, but exercised his talent for art so ably that he was enabled to pursue his studies in Berlin. He also went to Paris and had the good fortune to paint the portrait of Helena, Duchess of Orleans, by which he gained the protection of the reigning Royal Family. After the French Revolution of 1848 he returned to Schwerin, where he painted many excellent pictures for the Grand Duke. He died in 1873.
