The Adoration of the Shepherds
Giovan Battista Spinelli (Chieti, 1613 - Ortona, 1658) was an Italian painter. Giovanni Battista Spinelli belonged to a very wealthy family from Bergamo. Her father, Sante Spinelli moved from Bergamo to Chieti, where he was a merchant of grain. His sister Catherine married Baron Louis de Pizzis of Ortona. Spinelli established himself as an artist throughout Abruzzo. Ortona in the Church of SS. Trinity, there is a Coronation of Mary and other paintings made around 1630; in various churches in Ortona, Chieti Penne and you can see other paintings of a later period
Around 1630, Spinelli moved to Naples and met Giovanni Battista Caracciolo and Massimo Stanzione, the latter is considered by Bernardo De Dominici as the last of the disciples. From the two Neapolitan artists acquired a different conception of composition, while maintaining its independence color.
