Aurelio García Lesmes (Valladolid, 1884 - Mexico, D.F., March 25, 1942) was a Spanish landscape painter later nationalized Mexican.

Biography

Originally trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of the Purísima Concepción of his native city, he continued his studies in Madrid with great advantage, which allowed him to obtain medals at the National Fine Arts Exhibitions of 1922 and 1926.

The first great exhibition of the author took place in the Museum of Modern Art of Madrid in 1931. During the Second Republic accedes by opposition to a place like professor of drawing in Valladolid. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was in Madrid, and could not return with his wife, whom he would never see again.

Member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, in the war he carried out propaganda activities on posters and murals. He collaborated in the transfer and rescue of the paintings of the Prado Museum to Valencia, where he settled in 1937, leaving the capital's front. Once in the capital of the Turia, he obtained a place of professor in an institute of Orihuela. At the end of 1937 he went to Barcelona, ​​where he continued his work for the Republic and taught drawing at the Instituto Obrero in the city.

Shortly before the end of the war, Garcia Lesmes flees to France on May 26, 1939, to embark for Mexico along with a large number of Spanish exiles. In the capital of the country, in a small apartment, he lives and remakes his study, while at the same time he obtains a teaching post at the Luis Vives Institute. He maintains contact with other Spanish refugees, frequents the conversations with the compatriots and begins a new stage to the one being granted Mexican nationality to him in 1941. Its life is truncated of unexpected way to the death in a traffic accident the following year.

His work is divided into two parts, always within the landscaping: the one that develops in Spain, where his paintings show a renewed image of the fields of Castile, to which he returns in all his production, and the most luminous that emigration offers him In another environment, climate and country like Mexico. He was considered one of the most remarkable paisajistas of the first half of century XX.
