Andreas Stech or Andrzej Stech [1] ( September 9, 1635 in Slupsk, d. January 12, 1697 in Gdansk) - Gdansk painter and draftsman of the Baroque period.

Life

He was the son of the painter Heinrich Stech from Lübeck. In 1636 his family arrived in Gdansk. P In 1658 he married the daughter of a master, the widow of the painter Augustus Ranischu. After the death of his first wife, he married Adelgunde, daughter of Nicias Wulf. From the first marriage had five, the second of four children. In 1662 he became the master of the guild on the basis of the work: Appointment St. Andrew and Croesus staring at the flames. In 1667 he received the citizenship of Gdansk. In 1673 was juror. From 1677 he worked for King Jan III Sobieski. His brother was also a painter.

He painted religious paintings, portraits, still lifes, historical and allegorical scenes. On request the authorities of Gdansk performed numerous portraits and designs for tapestries . He painted religious paintings for churches urban Protestant and Catholic churches in Gdansk, Oliwa and Pelplin. Much of the work performed for King Jan III Sobieski, including unsaved ceiling paintings in the Palace of Wilanow. As a portraitist patterns combined with the tradition of Dutch painters of portraits created by Daniel Schultz. In religious art was influenced by Flemish painting, mainly by Peter Paul Rubens. In the years 1689-1696, with the participation of students, the band performed 15 paintings to galleries Cistercian monastery of monks. For the best images, the Foundation monastery in Pogódkach (1675). This large-format composition shows historical event that took place in 1258. The artist has updated costumes and architecture, which resembles that of his interior of the church in Pelplin. European success was as an illustrator of scientific works of Johannes Hevelius (30 drawings to Machineae coelestis) and naturalist James BREYNE (37 drawings of flowers to exoticarum Icones plantarum).
